Permeable Pavers: The “Water-Absorbing Sponge” of Urban Pavements

This year has seen abundant rainfall nationwide. Since the start of the flood season, many regions have experienced persistent heavy rainfall, leading to frequent incidents of short-term urban water accumulation and localized flooding, which have severely disrupted residents’ commutes and the normal functioning of cities. As a paving material used in “sponge city” initiatives, permeable pavers, with their unique water permeability and retention capabilities, have emerged as a new type of infrastructure material that balances practical functionality with ecological value. When rain falls, it does not need to be entirely channeled into the municipal drainage system; instead, it quickly permeates the bricks and seeps into the soil below. This effectively achieves the goal of “preventing water accumulation during light rain and mitigating urban flooding during heavy rain,” alleviating urban flooding pressure at its source and allowing rainwater to be naturally absorbed and returned to the ecological water cycle.

Based on their permeability pathways, permeable pavers are primarily divided into two categories: self-permeable pavers and joint-permeable pavers. The two operate on different principles and are suited for distinct applications.

Self-permeable pavers: Achieve permeability through the paver body itself

Self-permeable pavers rely on uniformly distributed, interconnected pores within the paver body to allow water to pass through. When rain falls on the paver surface, it penetrates directly downward through the paver itself, forming a “through-body permeability” structure.

Joint-Permeable Pavers: Rely on the gaps between pavers to facilitate water permeability

Joint-permeable pavers primarily rely on the dedicated gaps left between pavers after installation to allow rainwater to infiltrate. These gaps can be filled with black or white rice-husk stones to achieve a grouted effect. Alternatively, filling the gaps with fine soil and scattering grass seeds or moss creates a scenic effect reminiscent of the verse, “From afar, the grass appears green; up close, it vanishes.”

The Core Functions of Permeable Bricks

  1. Alleviating Urban Flooding and Enhancing Drainage Capacity

Permeable paving allows most surface rainwater to infiltrate the ground. This not only effectively prevents road surface puddling and ensures safe travel during rainy weather but also reduces the burden on municipal drainage systems, making it an effective solution for addressing urban flooding.

  1. Replenishing Groundwater and Regulating the Natural Water Cycle

The porous structure of permeable pavers allows rainwater to quickly seep into the ground, effectively increasing groundwater recharge and restoring the natural water cycle disrupted by hardened road surfaces. At the same time, they can store water during heavy rains and release it gradually to reduce the risk of urban flooding, while slowly releasing stored groundwater during droughts to replenish river flows.

  1. Mitigating the Heat Island Effect and Regulating the Urban Microclimate

Permeable pavers help maintain a certain level of soil moisture; as moisture evaporates from the pavers and soil, heat is absorbed, thereby lowering pavement temperatures. Compared to traditional concrete and asphalt pavements, permeable pavers have lower surface temperatures, reducing the absorption and storage of urban heat. This effectively mitigates the urban heat island effect and enhances the comfort of living and traveling within neighborhoods.

  1. Protecting Urban Ecology and Enhancing Environmental Resilience

Continuous rainwater infiltration helps maintain groundwater levels, providing ample moisture for urban vegetation. It also creates a favorable habitat for soil microorganisms, promotes nutrient cycling, and contributes to the stability of urban ecosystems.
